Downtown LA gets an edgy vibey hotel to go with its edgy new vibe. It's called The Proper.

The big decision about Los Angeles is where? It’s not like London, where everywhere is basically here unless you’re staying in Catford or Romford or Ilford or one of the other ‘ford’s. If you find yourself in the wrong bit of LA, you’ll be in $25 Ubers the whole time. Like the whole time.

For years it was all about West Hollywood. It’s what you think of as LA. Hollywood Hills as a backdrop, Sunset Boulevard running through it (mind you, that mother is so long it runs through most places), Selling Sunset offices right in the middle of it. The old-school gay bars are down on a couple of blocks on Santa Monica as are Lisa ‘Real Housewives’ Vanderpump’s empire of gay, semi-gay and pseudo-gay bars and restaurants. But is it cool anymore?

Yes. But not as cool as Downtown – or the Downtown Arts District as the old centre of town has been rebranded, no doubt by the kind of people who work in the Oppenheim offices of Selling Sunset. Yes, it’s grungy but it’s edgy. Yes there’s a huge homeless problem but it’s also very diverse. Yes, the office blocks look like Downtown Anywhere In The Whole Wide World but then there’s the Walt Disney Concert Hall by the late Frank Gehry, which doesn’t look like anything anywhere (OK, maybe a bit like the Gehry Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao) and the turquoise Art Deco Eastern Colombia Building – arguably the most beautiful building in LA. But no arguing! – and the new-ish The Broad modern art museum, which is like a greatest hits of every bit of modern art you were ever interested in from Warhol through Koons to Cindy Sherman.

Dover Street Market, Acne Studios, Paul Smith, a brand new Apple store inside a classic Downtown building, NeueHouse Bradbury (a private members’ club that has been called one of the most thrilling buildings in all America), even Soho House has got in on the act with Soho Warehouse, a huge outpost of the famous London-based private members’ club. Names, sweetie, names.

Even the gay scene here is different from WeHo, where you could be in Miami or Birmingham or anywhere they play wall-to-wall Dua Lipa. Here it’s older yet younger, scratchier but funkier and, again, very diverse: one of the most popular gay bars, the New Jalisco is Latinx.

And with this new edgy, arty vibe has come a crop of edgy, arty hotels, none edgier or artier than the Proper, a San Francisco-originated group that’s just starting to spread. Right on Broadway (not very much like the New York Broadway) in the shadow of some of those skyscrapers but right opposite an altogether more interesting Mexican-looking Herald Examiner building, which means there’s light and, in the thick of some of that classic LA deco, it’s a short jump from most of the spots listed above, even if you do that jump in a $7 Uber (that’s the minimum).

Walk in and you already have their mission statement of ‘delivering culturally relevant and enriching experiences through iconic design’ right there in your face, with Kelly Wearstler doing the iconic design bit, all orchestrated by staff so genial and fun you’ll want some to take home. Proper pride themselves on finding fantastically stylish historic buildings and the lobby – modest, because of the historic juxtaposition thing – is painted wall-through-ceiling with what look like Mexican folk stories framed by giant cactuses. You’re Instagramming already.

To the left is Caldo Verde, one of two eat ’n’ drink options, with a menu that blends Portuguese flavours and Californian sensibilities in surroundings that showcase about as much history as this part of town has to offer in its classic tiles and stained-glass windows. Your other option, Cara Cara, is if anything more spectacular in that it’s mostly open-air and up on the roof with views across Downtown. The vibe is laid-back, the kind of place you end up spending the whole afternoon, maybe with a little dip in the Jacuzzi and a lie on the sunbeds in between rounds, making friends and finding lovers, maybe by the fire pit if there’s a breeze.

When it comes to rooms, they’re cosy and homey, if your home is impeccably designed with natural textures and Aesop products in the bathroom, that is. And details, everywhere. You’ll just want, like, everything. One of the two superstar Especially Proper suites (we love a play on words) is made out of an old basketball court, the other a disused indoor pool – the place used to be a members club in the 1930s – so homey doesn’t mean small at Proper, not in any way.

LGBTQ visitors will always want to go to West Hollywood – of course they will – but if you feel you’ve been there and done that, or you want to shake up your LA visit and really see a different side to the gym bunnies and bar-flies, then it’s all about Downtown. And if it’s all about Downtown, then it’s all about Proper Downtown LA… and there’s no getting away from that. Book with Design Hotels

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a single travel writer totally not in possession of a good – or even slight – fortune must be in want of a decent drink. Several, seeing as you ask.

Toni Torelló, co-owner of Bodega Torelló – and, as it transpires, chief sampler and, as it also transpires, new favourite person – totally got that memo. Bodega Torelló, for those familiar with the world’s more salubrious booze aisles, makes bloody good wine. In particular Cava, for which Spain – actually, if we’re being pedantic, Catalonia – is renowned. Though today we’re here to sample a whole new type of sparkling wine, Corpinnat, which is destined to be the fizz on everyone’s lips, especially if we have anything to do with it. Because, not content with producing bloody good Cava, Toni Torelló decided to up the Cava ante and create a super-Cava, if you will. One where the quality threshold was so high it deserved a name of its own. Corpinnat. Remember it. Buy it. Impress your friends at dinner parties with it. Sod them and just down it yourself.

And it all started so well, the Corpinnat tasting, the sipping and that sucking thing they do and absolutely not spitting it out because we’re not animals and the fresh tapas - sorry, tapes, which is the Catalan spelling - and the tearing off the bread just so then dipping it in local olive oil and the bons mots that got even bonnier the more we didn’t spit it out. Oh, Toni.

And rolling with the homies down Bodega Torelló is just one of the foodie/drinkie things Almanac – among Barcelona’s most beauteous places to stay – will lay on for you if you ask nicely. Or book the Almanac Barcelona Foodie Package, which would make much more sense. What you’ll also get is a three-hour gastronomy tour of Barcelona led by a local foodie, in our case the charming Zaida – who, poor thing, got us lot straight from Bodega Torelló so rambunctious barely covers it – but we at least enjoyed the gastro with gusto. You’ll get up close and personal with local turrón, taste-test olive oils, visit food markets including The Boquería – which makes other markets look like a stall down Albert Square – washing it all down with beer as you go. And Santa Caterina, where you can get down and dirty with seasonal delicacies like calçots (think large spring onions, then dipped in Romesco sauce). Very Catalan, very messy, don’t wear your best whites. Then – twist our arms why don’t you – the grand finale, a private wine-tasting at one of Barcelona’s most renowned vintners. Don’t ask us the name; our notes look like a serial killer let loose on an Etch A Sketch. Zaida will know. (Oh, turns out Zaida does know. Vila Viniteca!)

What you’re also getting is dinner – lunch if you’d prefer – at Virens, Almanac’s signature restaurant. And what a signature! Plant-forward (which, in Barcelona, is remarkable in itself. While the plant-based scene is getting punchier, ‘You can have ham though?’ is not an uncommon response when you break it to them you’re vegan round these parts) Virens is a beauty in looks and in menu. Michelin-starred Rodrigo de la Calle is doing the do, and he will do your do however you like it. Because while Virens’ thing is plant-forward, some people still do apparently insist on fish (imagine!) or meat (even the pretty animals!), and who’s Rodrigo to argue. Us lot went fully halo-above-head vegan, which meant roasted cauliflower heart with black garlic aioli, carrot salmorejo (think gazpacho, more of a kick), white asparagus with black garlic demi-glace (they like their garlic. And who are we to argue?) and a good ol’ vegetable green curry. Oh, and shed-loads of Corpinnat, because Almanac and Toni Torelló are besties.

And we’ve barely got to the loveliness and classiness and general deliciousness of Almanac, which is refined luxury from top to toe and back again. Up top is the Azimuth Rooftop Bar – among the best rooftop bars in Barcelona, even if we do say so – which becomes buzzier than a buzzy thing come sundown and, round the corner, the pool. Then it’s down to the rooms – unless you’ve got one of the penthouses, lucky you – which are crisp and chic and bright with bleached woods and cosy signature furniture with nods to mid-century modernism and marble bathrooms and local artworks peppered here, even there and, if you play your cards right (or just ask!) views of Gaudí masterpieces out there in Eixample, one of the grandest parts of town.

We like a good package when it comes to hotels. It’s like a gift with purchase down Selfridges Beauty Hall, only these gifts are actually useful. Exciting food discoveries, new friends over tapas, Romesco sauce all down that nice blouse of yours and a whole new fizz in your booze artillery. I mean, just wait until you start blaming it all on the Corpinnat!

This little Piggy's gone to the beach...

Charm. You can’t buy it, you can’t fake it (we know: we’ve tried). You’ve either got it or you haven’t. The Pig on the Beach would know all about that. They have it in spades.

You know the story of The Pigs, a collection of hotels in impressive historical buildings out in the wilds somewhere that specialise in food to such an extent that they’re known as much – more? – for their 25-mile menus, where everything is sourced locally and is fresher than your average daisy, as they are for the actual hotel side of things. And so popular is The Pig on the Beach down on the Dorset coast that it can take weeks, months maybe, to get a room. Luckily, we were prepared to wait.

The Pig on the Beach is based in a country house, all gables and chimneys and steep slate roofs right on the beach – did the name give it away? – in Studland, that nature reserve in the Poole/Bournemouth/Swanage area. Studland, who anyone into getting into their nude will know, gets a bit clothing-optional when the weather turns. And it’s the perfect area for it.

With views of the cliffs along the coast, a path leading you right to the sea and the odd sheep wandering about in the field out back, just for a pop of white in all that green and blue, it is, like all the Pigs, picture perfect, the sort of spot chocolate boxes were manufactured for.

There’s the main house, a ramshackle-looking yellow thing housing a variety of room types, then there are the thatched dovecotes and even rooms based in pairs of shepherd huts, one hut with bed and wood-burner and lounging, the other a bathroom complete with free-standing bath. More shepherd huts down in that field operate for hotel spa treatments that get booked up almost faster than the hotel itself.

So far, so charming. But it’s what they’ve done with the place. Step in, past rows of brightly-coloured Hunter wellies for you to borrow, and you’re in a country pile complete with wooden paneling, roaring fires, views out to the sea and proper antique furniture and paintings. And the charm is seeping out of the place to such an extent you might get some on you, whether you’re quaffing martinis in the little bar to the right or have taken your port through to one of the members-only snugs to the left. The restaurant, which fills a sea-facing conservatory, we’ll leave until later.

Up the creaky stairs and our room, looking right out to sea, is all wood paneling and oil paintings with a squashy bed, velvet cushions, even a roll-top bathtub right in the window so you can lounge using the Bramley products as you look out at that view. Ours is quite a size but you can go for an honestly labeled Extremely Small for less than £200 or a Snug Twin up in the eaves.

But as lovely as all this is, it really is the food that’s the draw. With a huge kitchen garden coming up with the biggest crop served in the restaurant, based in a conservatory-like addition to the main house that has a bit of a potting shed feel about it, sea-foraging and local producers fill in any gaps. They call it ‘simple food well done’ but it is at least a little fancy and very definitely beautifully put together whether you go for the local meats and fishes or a full-scale vegan menu that they seem to be able to pull out of their pockets without any trouble at all.

Add service that feels local and friendly and fun (as busy as it is, everyone seems to have time for a chat if that’s what they think you want) and you’re looking at the perfect country break a couple of hours from London in one of the most beauteous parts of the country. And a dollop of beach that the gays have called their own right there, left a bit. This little Piggy on the Beach has your name written all over it.

The English country house hotel... but not as you know it

The English country house hotel isn’t what the English country house hotel used to be. Not in the case of Lime Wood at any rate. Well, it is part of the Pig family of hotels, and as hotel families go you ain’t gonna get more delicious than that. (Wonder if they adopt?)

Set in the New Forest – and yes, that does mean that your taxi takes you past wild ponies munching on heathland – just ten minutes from Brockenhurst station, Lime Wood may go all the way back to the 13^th century but the loveliness is very now.

Set over a range of buildings, from the beautiful Georgian main house dappled with wisteria through what looks like an Art Deco second building to the Crescent Rooms, which come off like bungalows from New England with their clapboard facades and cottagey little doors, Lime Wood is a place to be discovered. You’re always coming across little arbours and paths lined with overhanging flowers and huge artworks and wellies lolling around just so and tables set up for afternoon tea or cocktails and hanging copper swing-chairs. All this with a backdrop of forest trees.

But that’s just the outside. You wait till you step in and see how unfusty and un-English-country-house this place is. Dotted with art – the owners are big collectors and there’s some pretty special stuff here, even Cocteau drawings – you move through reception, past the grand staircase lined with paintings and into an atrium with a glass ceiling dousing the place with sunlight. It’s up at the bar in the corner that magically good cocktails are served while you can have tea – or cocktails! – at the tables and chairs dotted about.

We’re leaving the actual food until last because if this place is famous for anything in particular, other than just general gorgeousness, it’s the quality of the dining – well, there is that Pig connection and that’s what they’re famous for. So let’s take you to our room, one of those new Crescent Rooms. Not that you’d think it was new as it all feels very Jane Austen with a sweet little sitting room just past the front door, umbrellas propped against the pastel wall, a sweet little open fire crackling just there. Follow around and you have your bedroom looking out onto trees and, further round, a bathroom with an antique free-standing bath and walls clad in rough timber. The overall effect is comfy/cosy/cool.

With the variety of buildings that make up Lime Wood, rooms obviously come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, though they all have the comfy/cosy/cool ethos of the Crescent Rooms. The art might be funkier, the upholstery busier, the fire less open, but there’s no room you’d be disappointed by. Not here.

Now for the food. Oh, the food! Overseen by Michelin-starry Angela Hartnett – yes, her off the telly – and Luke Holder of OXO Tower fame, Lime Wood is putting a lot of welly into its food offering, which might be why, with the locals clamouring for special nights out, you have to make sure they have space for you.

At the heart of it all is Hartnett Holder & Co, an Italian restaurant of some great imagination and quite a lot of English influences with lots of locally sourced ingredients making up menus that feature a weird array of kohlrabis, pressed ham hocks and fennel salami risottos. Go for lunch and you can get two courses for just £30. The desserts are to-die-for classics and can we express a personal note of thanks for the vegan meringue with strawberries and raspberries, because if we have to eat one more sorbet someone’s getting a sorbet spoon in the neck.

Imagine all this in a suite of beautiful rooms looking out over lawns towards the water and the forest after a couple of cocktails (who’s counting?) up at that atrium bar. And then you get to come back the next morning for a British, rustic buffet breakfast – à la carte if you’re that way inclined.

We know that the English food and hotel scenes have transformed themselves over the last couple of decades – from terminally out of date to somewhere people schlepp miles to enjoy – but Lime Wood, with its huge spa and indoor pool to boot, has taken things a mighty step beyond. There was a time when 'gay hotel' meant basically a knocking shop complete with 'DO Disturb' signs for your door. You'd get the most basic accommodation at very non-basic prices, which was like a gay tax for there being a murky-looking pool or a basement 'spa'. No thanks. We feel itchy just thinking about it.

In an era where sustainability claims in the travel industry have often been met with scepticism, a new venture aims to redefine the meaning of responsible tourism. Discover Collection, an elite private members-only hotel community, is set to launch in 2026, promising a fresh approach rooted in regenerative travel. Founded by veteran hoteliers Bernhard Bohnenberger, whose 28-year tenure at Six Senses included serving as president, the collection seeks to restore faith in genuine, impact-driven hospitality.

At the heart of Discover Collection lies a commitment to positive environmental and social impact. The initiative is underpinned by the Discover Collection Foundation and a network of Local Impact Funds, which will be supported by membership fees, donations, and charity auctions. Revenues will be redistributed to local communities neighbouring the group’s properties, fostering sustainable development and societal uplift.

The first properties are scheduled to open in Oman this September and Kenya in December. Following these, the collection plans an expansive rollout across regions including Albania, Switzerland, Greece, Morocco, Ireland, and Norway , home to the iconic Svart hotel, a waterborne design that will soon be radically reimagined. Bohnenberger emphasises that while each destination presents unique needs, every location, regardless of affluence, has communities that benefit from support.

Joining the exclusive club involves a light screening process aimed at aligning members’ passions with the collection’s ethos. Grace Probyn, the director of membership, explains: “The questions focus on regional engagement, personal interests, and cultural preferences. It’s about ensuring members are genuinely committed to meaningful travel and impact.”

Membership fees are set at $3,600 [£2,743] annually for individuals and $5,800 [£4,420] for couples, alongside a one-off administrative charge of $650 [£495]. Beyond access to remarkable retreats, members will have the opportunity to bid on 'spark events', unique cultural journeys to remote or unexpected destinations, complemented by specialised programming.

One of Discover Collection’s most innovative concepts is 'Post-Trip Integration'. This ensures that positive effects extend well beyond the hotel’s walls. Members will be connected with local practitioners and experts who help translate their holiday passions into ongoing lifestyle choices. For example, someone interested in wellness or sustainable living might have ongoing consultations with local specialists, transforming the hotel visit into a year-round journey.

On-site, expectations will revolve around understated, authentic luxury. Décor will feature locally-sourced crafts, antiques, and personalised touches, eschewing branding for a more human and culturally immersive experience. Similarly, the collection plans to prioritise quality over name-dropping, favouring rare artisanal champagnes and locally crafted furnishings rather than mainstream labels.

Is this a mountain in Portugal or Palm Springs?

Unexpected, that’s what it is. A design hotel worthy of Palm Springs in the middle of the mountains in Portugal? Have you finally gone mad? In the middle of a national park? Just like… there?

It’s true! Every word of it! It’s called Casa de São Lourenço and it is the second highest hotel in Portugal, second only to its sister hotel Casa das Penhas Douradas, a short drive round the side of a mountain heading, obviously, up.

But where Casa das Penhas Douradas is sort of what you were expecting from a hotel in the mountains, with its rural but modern feel, its wood everywhere, its comfy cosy furniture in front of wood burners, its indoor/outdoor vibe, its hikers turning up for tea, Casa de São Lourenço is an altogether different proposition.

It’s actually been doing business as a hotel since 1948 as a set up they called Inns, a bit like a Spanish Paradores – Spain is just over there, beyond that mountain, by the way – where the government took over buildings of interest and made them into reasonably priced stop-overs to encourage domestic tourism. And even though the original brick-built building is still very much part of things, Casa de São Lourenço has more than moved on up. Right up to five stars, in fact.

But let’s focus on the experience before we get to the facts. Walk through that original building into a lobby that is low-key and snooky – oh and look into that funny little chapel-like room there and take in the weird felt sculpture thing that seems to be growing all over it: more of that later.

But it’s when you pass the reception and step into the lounges and restaurants that you’ll need your inhaler. This addition is Slim Paley mid-century delicious with floor-to-ceiling windows to let those views flood in. It’s here in this spacious light-pelted dining room that you’ll sit with a vinho verde and just watch the sun and clouds paint colours on those mountains (too much? Blame the vinho verde). It really is something. We found ourselves finding any excuse to sit out there – cocktails, tea, anything – just to absorb it. Even the view across to the other suites in the hotel, past the wire chairs casting shadows on the concrete, is delicious in a very ‘modern house in the desert’ kind of way.

Not that we didn’t love being in our room, which did in fact have the same views. Up a flight of stairs and down some modern corridors is our suite, lined on one side with floor-to-ceiling felt curtains (we’re coming to the felt, hold your horses) in a deep burgundy, with a vaulted ceiling painted white and lavish views from two step-out windows. It’s gorgeous in summer but you can only imagine how delicious this would be with a wintery snowy landscape to look out on.

And as for the food down in that São Lourenço restaurant, with its myriad stars cut from felt (there it is again!) hanging from the roof, it’s willfully regional – we’re in the Beiras region, by the way, and the national park is the Serra da Etrela – with Chef Manuel Figueira masterminding a menu of fresh, healthy ingredients.

As for what there is to do, the spa and swimming pool-with-a-view downstairs should take up some of your time (the wild planting through the windows of the treatment rooms is gorgeous!) while you can go on accompanied hikes through the easy bits of the mountains, to check out the original buildings when this was earmarked as a place to recover from respiratory illnesses in a landscape that is a dead ringer for all those old Western movies you’ve tried to avoid over the years. Forests, churches on hilltops, sheep, rabbits, it’s Heidi-licious!

You can also take a trip into the handkerchief-sized town where the Burel family, the people who own the two hotels we’ve been talking about and still run the wool factory, have transformed the town into a centre for the coolest blankets, slippers, backpacks… everything, all made out of a wool felt, the same that’s dotted throughout the hotel. Take your card, you will not be able to resist the blankets, we guarantee.

And what a deliciously unexpected part of Portugal, which you tend to think of as beachy! In fact, next time we come, we’re doing Lisbon – or Porto – both fairly easy to get from to here, then to Casa de São Lourenço with a toe in Casa das Penhas Douradas then on to Salamanca, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Then home from Madrid. If only to stock up on those Burel blankets. Or vinho verde. Or those crazy-ass views from Casa de São Lourenço. The Shepherd Mayfair is almost upon us...

All hyped up for that new sexy hotel they've been promising in Mayfair? Cool your jets, there's been a development. Yes, the eagerly anticipated opening of The Shepherd Mayfair, an opulent 82-room boutique hotel in London’s prestigious Mayfair area, has been officially postponed to the first quarter of 2026. The project, born out of a collaboration between Bain Capital and Orka Investments, is set to revitalise the site of the former Park Lane Mews Hotel, located in the heart of Shepherd Market.

Redesigned by architecture and interior design firm Buckley Gray Yeoman, alongside Timothy Shepherd of Shepherd&, the property promises a blend of contemporary luxury and historic homage with three distinct food and beverage outlets on its ground floor, crafted to cater to diverse tastes and times of day. British brasserie Fayre will serve all-day dining, emphasising seasonal dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. After a lengthy and £31 million renovation, San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theatre is set to make its grand return in February 2026. There’s a bit of LA where LA is the last place you’d think you were. Country lanes dappled with sunlight, houses that could be in the Beckham bit of Gloucestershire, trees that meet overhead, little bridges with swans gliding under them… all this a short drive from the Elizabeth hurly burly of Santa Monica Boulevard.

Bel Air, the celebrity enclave that makes neighbouring Beverly Hills feel like the Holloway Road, has been a getaway for movie stars since the 1940s, even if you could actually probably walk here… if anyone walked in LA. And seeing as not everyone can own one of those immense houses on the hills all around, there’s a little nook, Hotel Bel-Air, with its 12 acres of gardens, where a global superstar can hang up her slingbacks, unzip her sheath dress and just kick back.

Ask Marilyn Monroe. She would know, she did her last ever photo shoot here. In fact, it’s been a veritable gay icon magnet over the years with Elizabeth Taylor, Cher, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Judy Garland, Bette Davis all ordering up Bloody Mary’s for breakfast in the sweet little outdoor terrace… we imagine.

Dating back to 1922 – over 100 years! That’s ancient history in LA terms! – the enclave was originally imagined as riding stables but was eventually converted into the luxury hotel we see before us today and the fact that it was converted probably adds to the higgledy-piggledy nature of the place.

Go over the little bridge to reception, then through the terrace, past the salons with big Bert Stern pictures of Marilyn from that last shoot, outside through gardens, up a little lift, past flowers (there are 4,000-and-odd plants dotted around) and eventually you get to your suite – more or less half the accommodations here are suites – where, in our case, we now need to recruit eight men to help populate the 10-man Jacuzzi, or we could just sit by our outdoor fire and drink wine. We thought we might go out, but we couldn’t drag ourselves away.

But though the Hotel Bel-Air may be classic, that doesn’t mean it has ever rested on its laurels, as they sure are pretty laurels. Refurbs are extensive and fairly regular while the addition of superstar chef Wolfgang Puck to the staff list has kept the F&B – that’s food and beverage, hotel speak for, well, food and booze – side of things up to the minute.

Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air – because when you have two globally revered names you just stick them together, you don’t go inventing restaurant names – has exactly the right laid-back atmos you need here. Anything fancier would jar. Take a little modern booth or a wicker chair in the shade of the planting, maybe through a little archway for extra privacy, and tuck into a menu based on the simplicity of wonderful ingredients: tortilla soup, Thai carrot and ginger soup, Italian summer truffle pasta… dishes culled from around the world and finessed. And where, at breakfast, Ella and Billie and Nancy (Wilson, not any of the others) tickled the air as we ate, what’s this, the best avocado toast in the world? Probably.

And if you need a dip, there’s the world-famous 75-year-old oval pool that started life as a ring to trot horses when this was still a stable. Now it’s surrounded by sky-high palms and loungers, famous from Bryan Ferry’s Another Time, Another Place album cover, from a bunch of Marilyn photos taken here, from where Robert Wagner used to be the pool boy… and he was damn good at it. Just lie back and wait for one of their frozen grape skewers to make its way to you.

It’s a tough juggling act, respecting the history of a landmark hotel without allowing it to slip into the past. At Hotel Bel-Air, they know what they’re doing. They celebrate the Hollywood connections that stretch well into the present day but those refurbs have kept everything classy and new.

Hollywood had hit that moment where it was so over… it’s back again. Yes, the plodding hordes of mega-gulping tourists are still there marveling at names written on the floor (seriously people!), the streets are paved with black dried-up spilled mega-gulps and the homeless situation, which you thought was already out of hand, has got worse… but the green shoots of a return to glory are in evidence and we think it’s high time for a rebirth! Which is where the hotel formerly known as Tommie Hollywood until it rebranded as Hollywood Volume, part of Marriott's Tribute portfolio, comes in. And how perfect it is for the Hollywood Renaissance (we’ve coined that term ourselves. Hope you like it)!

Set on Selma Avenue, literally one street down from the Hollywood Walk of Fame and one up from Sunset Boulevard which, remember, pretty much crosses LA, the location is peachy… even if there are homeless people camping just to your left (they are everywhere these days, it’s no reflection on a neighbourhood at all). Especially peachy seeing as there’s a Mama Shelter next door, a Dream just over the road and a whole little micro-neighbourhood of cool all around meaning you can definitely feel part of a scene.

And what a job they have done on Hollywood Volume! Four stars, which we know means nothing, and cool and quirky as you like. From the lobby with its open fires (yes, in Hollywood!) and squashy furniture and people in heavy-frame glasses tap-tap-tapping at their Apple laptops past floor-to-ceiling curtains, past the cute little breakfast bar where you can grab a complimentary coffee to the reception, which just feels like a guy saying 'hi', it’s all as fresh and now as you could wish.

They say it’s minimalist but there’s stuff to look at, even in rooms, which can be tiny but which have one whole side made of glass filled with views of the Hollywood Hills… if you’re pointed in the right direction, of course (and don’t be afraid to ask). The style is contempo Californian – splashes of colour, retro lighting – and even if you won’t be swinging too many cats (larger rooms are available), it’s a fun spot to be in and that really is the main thing.

Not that you’re going to want to be spending much time in your room, especially when there are names written on the floor just one street up to be reading! Not to mention the rooftop pool, which must surely get the award for cutest designed rooftop pool in Hollywood, with its mural made to look like a 50s postcard from Hollywood and retro fabric umbrellas and, thank god!, bar.

If you’re thinking of dining at your hotel – and we really really recommend you do – don’t worry when they send you outside to come back in to KA'TEEN when you could just go around those afore-mentioned floor-to-ceiling curtains: they’re just trying to let you have the full impact of walking through the wooden tunnel into one of the most beautiful patio spaces we can remember ever having seen in LA. Strung with lights, packed with booths (and packed with people even early, so don’t forget to book!) and full of laughter and Mexican music, it’s either the perfect date spot (for a lively date!) or the perfect party restaurant. It can juggle those two vibes. Can you?

The food was authentically Mexican – so hot! – and the Margaritas authentically delicious, so much so that we had several. The staff, as you can imagine, are all over you in a way that we certainly didn’t mind.

There was a time when if you were going to Los Angeles, Hollywood would be the last place you would want to stay. Way too skuzzy! But as is the way with skuzzy neighbourhoods, they tend to be the next hot thing. Such is the case with this little spot between West Hollywood and Downtown and things will only get better, so become an early-adopter.

Oh and look! The name ‘Diana Ross’… written on the ground.

The first time I came to the iconic – you’re going to hear that word a lot here, by the way – the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, it was to interview Paris Hilton at what is known as ‘the number one power lunch spot’ in all Los Angeles, the Polo Lounge. She ordered her food, stirred it, left it and skipped leaving me with the bill. Oh and there was that time I was practically kidnapped by one of Whoopi Goldberg’s press people and brought here for tea.

But then that is what the most famous hotel in America is famous for, superstar moments. And it’s most definitely having a moment right now even for a hotel that has had nothing but moments since it opened back in 1912 before even Beverly Hills the town was invented.

As we drive up the secluded approach on Sunset Boulevard just off one of those avenues of sky-high palm trees Beverly Hills is famous for, a couple of teenage girls are sneaking in to steal selfies by the iconic (there’s that word again!) Beverly Hills Hotel sign, in bang-on-trend bottle green. Even the font is fantastic. And if the Mediterranean Revival building swamped in palms looks familiar, you might know it from the cover of The Eagles’ Hotel California. Yeah, that’s it.

Just look at the style of the place. Pink, the sort of millennial pink that has been the hottest of hot colours for the last few years, is their signature, making everything from the key cards to the soaps highly covetable. And then there’s the trademark banana leaf wallpaper, in place since the 1930s, that is currently being copied the world over. You can even buy shirts with it on.

And milling around the low-key lobby – beautiful flowers, edgy art, boutique vitrines from the likes of Asprey of London – is not quite the crowd you’d expect from a hotel that has been operating for more than 100 years. No elderly dowagers or fading movie execs here but what looks like they might be a hip-hop band, a gay couple messing with each other’s hair in the mirror, successful people treating each other to celebrations in the iconic – sorry, legendary – Polo Lounge, very rich people behind very big sunglasses, a young family.

This in a place that has been home for everyone from Princess Margaret, Princess Grace, Frank Sinatra, Lauren Bacall, Humphrey Bogart, John and Yoko. Rex Harrison used to sunbathe naked in Bungalow 1 and would answer the door with just a handkerchief to hide his modesty, while the famous picture of Faye Dunaway nursing her Oscar by a pool surrounded by newspaper cuttings was shot right here. Marilyn Monroe was such a regular (she had her affair with Yves Montand here, apparently) they’ve named her favourite bungalow, No. 7, after her. From $9,000 a night you can take the beautiful spot, peppered with pictures of Monroe, and treat yourself to something from their Chanel No. 5 menu of bath products.

Another regular who is being honored with her own bungalow is actress, screen legend and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor. We’re not sure Bungalow No. 5 is going to make the $17,000 a night they charge for the Presidential Suite with its private pool and a safe big enough to sleep in, but you know it’s going to be gorgeous.

So, what is it like to actually stay in such an icon? In a word, delicious. The regular rooms are spacious, classy (well, what did you expect?) and classic in a palette of beige and dusty pink and white. You could possibly say a little 'granny' but you'd have to have a chic granny for this to be her style.

Meanwhile, out by the pool, that Faye Dunaway pool, it’s all low-key loveliness in bottle green and white stripes and little cabanas complete with TV, just in case the Eurovision Song Contest is on. And that Polo Lounge? Eat outside if you like, out with the concrete sunshades in the little terrace area (‘Isn’t that him off… Oh, yes it is!’) but for our money, it’s all about one of those booths inside so you can hear the plinky-plonk piano while you order up another Sauvignon. As for breakfast, all the smart money is on doing it up at the counter in the funny little downstairs bar/diner thing, where things seem to get a little rowdy even over grilled grapefruit.

‘I think we’re nearly here,’ says our taxi driver, with some trepidation, as we approach Folsom Street Fair, the world’s most famous sex street party. The clue is someone wearing nothing but a huge bunny head and a tiny little G-string making their way along the road. First stop, after giving a donation at the entrance barrier – the festival itself is free – is a huge hangar-sized bar for some Dutch courage, where a young man, who turns out to be from Swindon, tells me I’m going to be way too hot in the San Francisco sun in my boiler suit. I ask what brings a straight English man to America’s most notorious and queerest event. He’s impressed by my ‘gaydar’ but I point out that he’s wearing board shorts and practically every other man – apart from me – is in a jock strap. Except for the guy on the street outside the bar who is sitting naked apart from a Stetson on his lap to hide his modesty. It’s not clear why he’s taking the trouble as no one else is bothering. Even the high-powered lawyer friend who has brought us isn’t hiding very much. Folsom Street Fair, which is celebrating its forty-first year in 2025, is an eye-opener and no mistake. Taking over several closed-off blocks in the South of Market district, California’s third biggest outdoor one-day event is here to celebrate sexuality and sex – and yes, kinkiness - in all its forms. Starting out as an LGBTQ+ event to wind up Leather Pride Week, it now attracts anyone with a taste for wearing next to nothing, getting their fetish on and having intimate moments while everyone looks on or even takes photos. Like the middle-aged woman in a basque who has brought her naked husband down to show him off. Well, there’s quite a lot to show and he doesn’t seem to mind. On a stage is a next-to-naked Twister competition, while across the street a full-size wrestling ring compered by drag queens features bouts by strangely mis-matched contestants here to showcase revealing outfits rather than actually win. Or you can always just get spanked to raise money for charity. A fully kitted-out cop complete with shades and nightstick passes by, the only clue that he’s not real being the fact that his outfit is all rubber. He sees me eying him up and asks if I want a feel. Another clue. And then there’s the plus-size woman on huge platform boots whose outfit only comes up to her waist and then continues when it gets to her neck. And there are, of course, lots of ‘pups’ running around but then you see them at most LGBTQ+ events: men whose thing is wearing a foam rubber doggy head, usually teamed with not much more than a jockstrap, who behave, and wish to be treated, as if they were real dogs. Don’t offer to buy them a drink, put a bowl down. But nudity is the real name of the game at the Folsom Street Fair with the most modest wearing a G-string or jockstrap or cowboy chaps covering the legs with nothing where jeans would usually be… but this is San Francisco and full nudity is legal any day of any week anyway. Have lunch on Castro Street in the gay neighbourhood and you’re sure to see an elderly gay man in nothing but boots and a knapsack walk past, while outside the Starbucks on a sunny Sunday afternoon, a male/female couple are chatting over grande lattes in nothing but footwear. Apparently, the rule is if you want to go naked, you have to leave your house naked… but how would they police that? Oh and you are not allowed to have contact between public furniture and your body while naked. Which seems more than fair. But all that is just day-to-day. Folsom Street is a much-copied special occasion (there are versions in Berlin and Toronto) that takes over the whole weekend in the bars and clubs of San Francisco and, when the actual Sunday afternoon event winds down, relatively early around 6pm, all the action heads back to those bars and clubs. Oh and the guy in the hangar bar was right, by the way: the boiler suit was too hot in that unseasonably balmy late September weather… but I didn’t take a stitch off. Spoilsport? Maybe. The first thing anyone is going to mention about this gorgeous new Mykonos hotel is the pool. The longest on the whole island, it hugs the edge of the property like a blue ribbon with views right down to the Aegean and across the bay. But it’s long, so long you almost can’t swim from one end to the other without a break (or are we just really unfit?) But then we did stop for drinks from the bar halfway through.

And though that pool sucks up a lot of the attention – whether you’re at the bar, having lunch outside on the terrace, lazing on a lounger, or even up there in the restaurant proper – it’s not the only show in town, so to speak. And Cali does offer up a whole different way to do Mykonos, seeing as it’s not in town, which is party central, or on Ornos Bay, the other busy bit. Mind you, it’s also not that far from either or from attractions like Jackie O Beach Club, so you can have your cake and eat it then have some more, greedy!

Step into reception – is that a pool in reception? They do like their pools, clearly – and you have the style of the place right there. Classic Greek white-on-white but through a contemporary filter thanks to Athens-based designers SFTN Labs. Natural materials, lots of that white so as not to clash with the general blue-ness of the sea and sky and nothing over the top of fancy-schmanzy.

Get a buggy down to your room – although it’s super easily walkable: this is not one of those massive estates where you can’t get anywhere on your own – and you’ll see more of that immaculate taste in action. All the suites have sea views but if you can stretch to one with a private pool, then you really should. We even had a Pilates class and a massage out there on the terrace by the water, it’s that secluded. And apart from the great gym, they really do know how to bring first-rate teachers right into your room for a private one-on-one. Our masseur was one of the best we’ve ever had!

Inside the room, it’s all floaty fabrics, sea-views out of multiple windows and a simple, natural-feeling aesthetic that’s minimal and relaxing. But just dump your bags and let’s head to the bar – the one by the pool, not the one in the restaurant which we’ll save for later. Or we could even go to their little private beach just down there, to dip our toes in the water.

As far as stuff to do goes, lazing about is favourite. The food at lunchtime is so simple and delicious, you will need a will of iron to drag yourself away from the poolside… but if you did, you could get a transfer into the famous bars of Mykonos Town, Soho Beach House (if you’re a member of course), Jackie O Beach Club, whether it’s for daytime drinking or the evening DJs and drag shows. You can even charter a yacht to take you to a neighbouring island. Naxos perhaps.

You don’t even have to leave for dinner as the menus here have been hand-crafted by the first Michelin-starred chef in all of Greece, one Lefteris Lazarou. Dress down (or up… your call but it’s not a starchy place by any means) and tuck into anything from garlic shrimps to classic gyros. Oh and the delightful owner, Eric (Kyriakos if we’re sticking to Greek) treated us to the tastiest gin martini (or five) we think we’ve ever had. Maybe we should have another just to be sure.

It’s hard to make a splash on an island so full of amazing properties but with the coolest, most stylish of credentials and that pool to boot, really, how could Cali Mykonos fail? It couldn’t. Calimykonos.com

So, it’s official. Lisbon has just been voted the most romantic city on earth and from where we’re sitting in one of the most beautiful hotels in the hands-down most beautiful area with views right across to the famous bridge and statue, we’re not in any mood to argue.

The views in question come courtesy of the Hotel Bairro Alto, slap bang in the middle of the *checks notes* Bairro Alto, the ‘high district’, which might explain those views. It’s one of Lisbon’s top hotels – and we don’t just mean height-wise – a classic that has had a major upgrade and now serves as Lisbon HQ for famous London-based chef Nuno Mendes, who is a local lad.

But let’s start at the bottom. Located right on Praça de Camões, a darling little square with a statue and a kiosk-bar, this is prime real estate with dinky boutiques, ancient grand cafés and big-name stores within minutes. We’re in the big yellow building. The classic one. With the patisserie on the ground floor. That one.

And yes it is grand from the outside but, maybe thanks to award-winning architect Eduardo Souto de Moura, who’s responsible for the recent make-over, inside everything is low-key and gorgeous, from the smiley staff in old-school uniforms to the layers of plants to the modern wood desk… And much cosier than you might think from that grand façade.

Upstairs the rooms go from classically simple to simply stunning – but all with a playful quirk thanks to Eduardo – whether you’re in one of the hotel’s originals or in one of the newer add-ons that came with the refurb. Expect chic non-hotel colours – pale blues, reds – furniture that looks like someone actually went to a shop and chose it rather than put a pin into a hotel furniture catalogue and touches like hand painting on some of the walls. There’s an authentic feel to place. It feels like you’re in a classic hotel, even if it is a very funky old girl by now.

But it’s up on the roof that the real superstar stuff happens.
