Non-binary gender theorist Judith Butler responded to inquiries regarding female-only spaces during an event in San Francisco on June 13, 2024. Butler's comments were directed towards local lesbian activist Amanda Kovattana, who questioned the inclusion of trans women with penises in these spaces.
Kovattana posed her question in front of hundreds of attendees, asking, "If gender is to liberate us, why can't I as a lesbian, have a d***-free space? A space that is for women only, without penises?" Butler replied, "I think you can do that in your home," a remark that was met with applause from the audience. Butler further explained, "I hope and trust that you don't have a son with a penis. You are free to say it, and you are free to say it out loud."
Continuing, Butler elaborated, "I understand the revolting abhorrent character of rape. Those same women, those same men, may also love somebody with a penis. The penis is not a dangerous instrument." Butler emphasized that violence is often a result of societal constructs rather than anatomical features, adding, "I think that we don't, at least I don't, reduce people to their anatomical parts or their biological parts," which also received audience approval.
After the event, Kovattana shared a clip of their exchange on social media, expressing her perspective on lesbian spaces free from penises. The exchange generated significant discussion online, with varied reactions from the public.
The event, part of the City Arts & Lectures series, featured Butler promoting their new book, "Who's Afraid of Gender?"
