Danielle, a 35-year-old Dundee-based social worker originally from Georgia, USA, took her 11-year-old child, Ash, to Dundee Pride last year. Ash had expressed uncertainties about their gender identity, prompting Danielle to support them by attending the event.

Danielle, who identifies as bisexual, has exposed her children to diverse relationships and family members within the LGBTQ+ community, making such concepts familiar to them. Ash began questioning their gender after starting puberty early and often uses they/them pronouns.

In the US, Danielle found Pride events to be unsafe due to heavy police presence, as experienced at Atlanta Pride. However, they felt secure and welcomed at Dundee Pride. The children enjoyed activities like face painting, music, drag performances, and the Makaton choir.

Ash expressed excitement and comfort in the supportive and understanding environment of Dundee Pride, where they felt validated. Dundee Pride 2024 is scheduled for June 15-16, with free tickets available online.
